Amber Valley School Sport Partnership recently hosted a Multi-Sport Festival at Alfreton Leisure Centre during the run up to the Christmas holidays. Around 50 young people with a range of physical impairments and learning difficulties joined us to take part in a range of inclusive activities.

The afternoon consisted of the children trying out 5 different activities with focus on teamwork and self-belief. The games were Boccia, Polybat, Goalball, New Age Kurling and Seated Volleyball with relevant adaptations used to ensure all participants could take part at an appropriate level. Adapting the activities accordingly meant everyone could be included regardless of their physical capabilities.

Each activity helped children develop a wide range of skills such as teamwork & communication through Goalball, self-belief through progressively more challenging activities in Seated Volleyball while Boccia was a test of children’s precision and concentration.

The event also provided a wonderful opportunity for sports leaders from David Nieper Academy to plan and deliver the activities, many of whom were working with children with additional needs for the very first time. The group were supported to design progressive activities making use of specific inclusive sports equipment to ensure the pupils had a fantastic experience.

We hope everyone enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did, a huge thank you to everyone who attended!
