In February 2018 Amber Valley SSP visited The Gambia in West Africa to launch a brand new sports and health programme with the aim of impacting young people in schools and townships across the country.

Jobs were provided to four highly motivated local people who were tasked with engaging and inspiring The Gambia’s next generation through sport and activity.

Sam, JG and Yaya were previously unemployed but had a real passion for and knowledge of sport and its ability to change lives. Ali, who works as a teacher, provides a tangible link between AVSSP’s African coaches and the team in the UK.

Working as the training provider on behalf of Cosy Direct, AVSSP trained staff, provided equipment and resources as well as engaging with schools ahead of the programme’s launch.

Schools across Amber Valley have been incredibly supportive of the work done out in Africa with many organising ‘Gambia Days’ where students and staff have researched information on the country, worn the red, blue and green of The Gambia flag or even tried cooking up some Gambian cuisine!

Both St Johns Primary (Belper) and Holbrook Primary performed brilliantly on Monday evening to book their place in the Amber Valley High 5 finals
The Belper cluster competition was played across two sites with both Belper School and Ecclesbourne School in use
Players were tasked with playing in a different position for every half of a game played in keeping with the High 5 Netball guidelines

Riddings Junior followed up their success in the Alfreton cluster competition to claim the Amber Valley Tennis title by once again pipping Curzon Primary in the closest of competitions
The four schools in attendance qualified for the finals through their excellent performances in the cluster competitions hosted at Belper, Heanor and Alfreton with Riddings Jr and Curzon Primary joined by Codnor Primary and Pottery Primary at the finals
Once again players competed against one another in singles matches with their results contributing towards a team score

Nine school teams competed for the Amber Valley Y5/6 Gymnastics title on Thursday evening with the standard of performances incredibly impressive all evening!
Students performed on the floor, the body management and the vault stations with their performances judged out of 35 on each before being added together to form a team score
It was evident from the fantastic performances how much work had gone into them from both students and staff which was remarked upon by all the judges!

After a fantastic standard of Y3/4 Gymnastics it was Breadsall Primary who came out on top just pipping Codnor Primary by 3 points
Students were expected to learn and practice three different routines – a floor routine, a body management performance and a vault jump. These three performances were then judged out of 35 with the scores added together to form a team result
The standard was amazing across all the stations with students showing off what they'd learnt in school across the half term
